About Coplen Christian Counseling

Our History

30 years ago, God called Walter Coplen to complete his education and training in the counseling field through the Religious Education Department at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Walter knew he wanted to counsel individuals and families by incorporating current therapeutic principles and solid Christian principles.

After working in the mental health in-hospital treatment field for a few years, Walter went to work in the private practice setting with Minirth Meier Clinic in St Louis, Missouri. When they wanted to open an office in Columbia, Missouri, Walter and his wife moved to Columbia where he helped to open a new Meier Clinic office. In 2003 with the blessings of the Meier Clinic he opened his own practice in Columbia and so Coplen Christian Counseling started.

Statement of Christian Faith and Counseling Practice

  • We believe the Bible to be the inspired, infallible, inerrent, authoritative word of God.
  • We believe there is one God eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
  • We believe in the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, and in His personal return in power and glory.
  • We believe the regeneration and salvation of lost and sinful man, available by grace through faith in Christ as one's Savior, is absolutely essential.
  • We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a good, holy and Christ-like life.
  • We believe in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost; they that are saved unto the resurrection of life and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.
  • We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ.
  • We believe in the sanctity of life and do not support abortion.
  • We believe in the importance of marriage and, although the Bible states that divorce is permissable in two unusual circumstances (adultery as described in Matthew 5:31 and abandonment of a Christian by a non-Christian as described in 1 Corinthians 7:15), we will do all we can to preserve marriage.
  • We believe all psychological principles should be thoroughly evaluated through the grid of Scripture, which we believe holds the final authority.
